DONALD R. MURPHY, DC, FRCC

Dr. Murphy provides primary spine care for patients with back and neck problems. His treatment focuses on self-care – helping patients take care of themselves under his guidance. In facilitating self-care, Dr. Murphy applies a variety of techniques like manipulation and other manual therapies, a variety of exercise approaches, and various methods of patient education.

Dr. Murphy has chosen to focus on spine care to solve problems that cause a great deal of pain and disability. He’s become even more passionate about spine care as he found through his career that back and neck problems are collectively the number one cause of disability, both worldwide and locally. They’re also the number one driver of cost in our healthcare system. Dr. Murphy is committed to innovation for patients with back and neck problems, which is why he has helped pioneer the new role of primary spine practitioner.

In practicing primary spine care, Dr. Murphy believes in doing everything he can to help patients with back or neck problems. These efforts lead to working relationships with other practitioners who play key roles, including primary care practitioners, physical medicine and rehabilitation physicians, spine surgeons, behavioral health specialists, rheumatologists, neurologists, and others. This collaboration reinforces the importance of a team approach to caring for patients with back or neck pain.

Dr. Murphy took an unconventional path in his medical education, first studying theater to become an actor before eventually turning to healthcare. After gathering four years of college credits, he entered chiropractic school and completed his medical degree at Northeast College of Health Sciences, thus earning his doctorate before he formally obtained his bachelor’s degree from Excelsior College!

When he’s not working with patients, Dr. Murphy’s favorite hobby is physical fitness – particularly going to the gym, biking, and swimming. He has an active family, with a wife and three grown daughters. He and his wife love being outdoors, especially at the beach during Rhode Island summers. Dr. Murphy also loves to read, his favorite areas being history and biography, and he enjoys movies and music.
