The winter months are upon us, but that doesn’t mean it has to be one of the unhealthiest time of year for you and your family. Even though it feels like all you want to do is hibernate, here are five ways you can keep yourself healthy no matter what the weather is like.

1)  Eliminate sleep debt- Typically, we sleep a lot less than the recommended seven to nine hours a night. A good night’s sleep is important to your health and wellbeing. In the winter, we naturally sleep more because of the longer nights. It’s the perfect time to catch up on those much needed zzz’s!

2) Drink more milk- During the winter, you should make sure your immune system is in tip-top shape since you are 80% more likely to develop a cold in the winter months. Great sources of protein and vitamins A and B12 are milk and dairy products such as cheese and yogurt. These foods are also an important source of calcium for keeping our bones and joints strong.

3) Eat your veggies!- It may be tempting to fill up on a bunch of unhealthy comfort food, but you should still keep in mind the portions of a healthy diet, which includes five portions of fruit and vegetables a day. Instead of eating a sugary treat, try sweet dried fruits such as dates or raisins or a juicy clementine.

4) Try winter activities for the whole family- Instead of lounging around all winter, get out and try a new activity with the whole family! You can try ice skating or maybe take a winter walk outside.

5) Don’t skip on breakfast- Winter is the perfect time for a nice warm breakfast, such as a bowl of oatmeal. Oats contain lots of vital vitamins and minerals as well as stop the temptation for a mid-morning snack. Choose a healthy breakfast so you can have a healthy start to your day.
