Ortho Rhode Island Helps Local Seniors Plan for Aging in Place

For seniors who plan to live and age in their residence of choice, growing older presents unique challenges – challenges Casey Ashby, OTR/L and Ashley Weber, COTA of Ortho Rhode Island are working to help them overcome. On Monday, December 2nd at 10:30 a.m., Ashby and Weber will host “Aging in Place,” an informative discussion at the North Kingstown Senior Center.

During the hour-long discussion, Ashby and Weber will provide information about the aging process, explain ways to increase ease, safety, and independence with daily tasks, and share strategies to increase mobility and eliminate fear of falling. They’ll also review environmental modifications like bathtubs benches and grab bars, and assistive devices like one-handed cutting boards and built-up eating utensils.

As part of their work at Ortho Rhode Island’s Warwick office, Ashby and Weber help seniors create plans to help maintain their quality of life as they grow older. Aging, Ashby explains, can impact “activities of daily living (ADL) and other activities, such as getting around their home, driving safely, socializing, home upkeep, and health maintenance.”

That’s why she and Weber are connecting with seniors in their community. “The purpose of this talk is to help seniors ensure they can live where they choose and get any help they need for as long as they can,” Ashby says.

“We enjoy hosting these types of events because we are able to educate and help people before they really require assistance. We love that we have the ability to provide people with a better quality of life, while also providing this education in a setting that is comfortable to them.”

“Aging in Place” is part of a series of discussions hosted by Ortho Rhode Island, which also includes “Healthy Gardening” to be offered in April 2020, and “Living with Arthritis” which was held in November. For more information about attending, please call the Senior Center 401-268-1596.
