Self-Care

 

Self-care is a new and foreign concept for some people. Not only has it become more and more difficult to fit into our busy schedules, but what exactly does self-care even look like? And how can it benefit us as individuals, practitioners, partners, parents and friends?

Self-care is an umbrella term referring to just about anything good (while being healthy) that we can do for ourselves. It's about knowing when your battery is running low and taking the time to re-charge. It's about learning how to give yourself the same grace and compassion that you might provide for someone else. So here is a reminder to all my ultra-compassionate coworkers company-wide! Be kind to yourselves, you matter.

The BENEFITS:
1. Increase disease resistance!
Evidence supports that most self-care activities activate your parasympathetic nervous system. Thus, reinforcing the immune system. (And we all know how important that is)
2. Increase Productivity
This only works if we learn how to say “No” to overextending ourselves and make more time for things that matter most. This way, we decrease anxiety and increase motivation and performance.
3. Heightened Self-Esteem
If you can manage to consistently make time for yourself, signals will be sent to your subconscious that you matter and have deep value.
4. Increased Self Knowledge
Think of it like researching yourself. Ergo, you get to know yourself much better.
5. Increasing your ability to give
Its kind of like the metaphor when a plane is going down. “First put on your own mask before trying to help others put theirs on.”

TYPES of Self-Care
Physical – For some of us, this is physical activity. For others it's REST!!!!
Emotional – Face those emotions head on! This will help you cope and believe it or not…. Reduce stress
Sensory – Increasing awareness to the things around you will raise your ability to live in the moment and let go of anxieties
Social – Humans are social beings, whether you’re an introvert, extravert or somewhere in between. Be with people who make you happy and trim off the fat that brings in negativity
Spiritual – Meaning simply get in touch with your values, whatever those might be.
