‘Tis Apple Season!

I interrupt your regularly scheduled orthopedic content to bring you this delicious (mostly healthy) fall dessert recipe! This apple crisp recipe comes directly from Mamma Mandile herself and can be modified to fit most dietary needs! This recipe has been a staple in our family for years served as a dessert around the holidays or to warm you up on chilly fall evening (and makes a great breakfast if there are leftovers). This recipe is delectable, and you won’t be able to stop yourself from a second helping!

Ingredients:
• Topping:
o 1 Cup of flour (can substitute with gluten free option if needed)
o 1 Cup of packed brown sugar
o 1 Cup of rolled oats (I prefer old-fashioned)
o 1 Teaspoon of cinnamon
o 1 Stick (8 Tablespoons) of butter (can substitute for dairy free option if needed)

• Base:
o Approx 4 pounds of apples peeled and sliced – can use any cooking variety of apples including Cortland or Empire- if you like a firmer baked apple, you can choose Granny Smith
o Cinnamon to taste/coat apples – apples are naturally sweet, no need for added sugar!

Steps:
1. Preheat oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit and gather a 9x13 baking dish
2. Put all topping ingredients in an electric mixer and mix until crumbly (can also mix by hand for an extra workout)
3. Place peeled and sliced apples into baking dish and sprinkle with cinnamon and mix until evenly coated

4. Top apples with oatmeal mixture and bake for 1 hour or until golden on top

5. Scoop, serve hot, and enjoy! Can always top with vanilla ice cream, whipped cream, or powdered sugar for some added sweetness!
