Causes, Symptoms, and Treatment Options for Arthritis

arthritis

Arthritis is a condition that affects the joints of the body, causing inflammation, pain, and limiting motion. The two most common forms of arthritis are osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis. Your orthopedic doctor will evaluate your specific symptoms and develop a treatment plan tailored to address your needs.

Causes of Arthritis
Osteoarthritis is the most common form of arthritis. It is caused by wear and tear on the joints over time, and is associated with older adults. This wear and tear breaks down the cartilage cushioning the joint, causing the bones to rub together and promote inflammation. Another common form of arthritis is rheumatoid arthritis. Rheumatoid arthritis is an autoimmune disease that affects the entire body, and also causes inflammation in the joints.

Symptoms of Arthritis
Arthritis symptoms include swollen, stiff, and aching joints. Osteoarthritis may occur in only some or all of your joints, and typically appears first in those that bear weight. These include the knees, hips, and spine. Joints frequently used in sports or work activities may also develop early signs of arthritis. In some cases, excess bone growth, called bone spurs, occurs in the joints. These can be identified by your doctor on a diagnostic image. Rheumatoid arthritis can cause swelling and pain in the joints at any age. Joints may also feel hot to the touch or appear reddened and enlarged.

Treatments for Arthritis
Your orthopedic doctor will suggest a treatment or combination of treatments based on your joint pain and mobility. Medication to reduce inflammation and address pain is often sufficient for mild arthritis symptoms. Physical therapy and regular exercise can help to increase strength and range of motion for easier, more comfortable movement. Surgical solutions to remove excess bone or damaged cartilage may be suggested if other, less invasive treatment methods yield unsatisfactory results.
