MRI

An MRI scan is a safe way to diagnose musculoskeletal injuries.

A magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan is a safe and painless procedure that’s used to diagnose a condition and in some cases to monitor recovery. Do you have a scheduled MRI coming up? At Blackstone Orthopedics, high quality care is our main focus. We are proud to offer state-of-the-art technology and a knowledgeable staff to ensure a comfortable experience.

Here’s what you can expect from an MRI; before, during, and after the scan.

Before the Scan

Before the scan, you should be able to eat and drink normally, unless you are told otherwise. Depending on the part of the body that’s being scanned, you may be required to have an injection of dye to help certain tissues and blood vessels to show up more clearly. You will also be required to remove all metal objects –including piercings, jewelry, and hearing aids before the scan, and should wear clothing that doesn’t contain metal. If you have metal implants, it’s important to tell your doctor about them before the MRI.

During the Scan

The MRI machine looks like an open-ended cylinder. You will lie on a motorized bed that will move you into the scanner. You will enter the machine either head first or feet first, depending on what area of your body is being scanned. Once you are inside, the machine will create a strong magnetic field around you, and radio waves will be directed at your body. During the scan, there will be loud tapping noises as the electric current is turned on and off. You will be given headphones to listen to music during the scan, and even have the option of bringing along your own CD to listen to your favorite music. The exam usually lasts between 20-45 minutes.

During the scan, you will also be required to lie extremely still since moving can cause the images to be blurred. The technician will be able to talk to you through an intercom and you will be able to talk back –expressing any concerns that you may have. The procedure usually takes between twenty and forty-five minutes, but it could go longer depending on the type of scan.

After the Scan

Once the scan is complete, you will be free to leave since an MRI is an outpatient procedure that doesn’t require an overnight stay. If you have taken a sedative, however, you will need to pre-arrange a ride home as it won’t be safe for you to drive once you wake up.

MRI scans are considered to be an extremely safe form of imaging. Extensive research has been conducted on MRI scans to determine whether they pose a risk, but no evidence has been found. This means that MRI is one of the safest medical procedures available.
