As the summer months have approached, it is time for the outdoor activities to begin. Whether you are the sporty type or the sit back and relax kind of person, the inconvenience of joint pain can put a damper on your plans. Joint pain is a common issue that arises as a person reaches their older years and the discomfort is something that no one wants to experience. Although it is not 100% avoidable, there are things one can do in order to increase the pain relief. Comfort for joint pain, believe it or not, can be found in certain foods you eat. Examples provided by Blackstone Orthopedics & Sports Medicine include:

Antioxidants

Antioxidants, such as Vitamin A, Vitamin C, Vitamin E and Selenium are commonly involved in the fighting of free radicals. Free radicals are a partial cause for the discomfort felt in one’s joints.

Examples of foods including these vitamins include: Vitamin C – Fruits such as grapefruit, papaya, oranges, mangoes, raspberries, pineapples and tomatoes, as well as vegetables such as asparagus, red peppers, and broccoli.

Vitamin E – Avocados, whole-grain breads and cereals, sunflower seeds and peanut butter

Selenium – Salmon, Brazil nuts, oatmeal and brown rice.

Fatty Acids

Fatty acids, such as omega-3 are known for the reduction of swelling between the joints. Salmon, sardines and herring as well as whole grains, green vegetables, nuts and seeds are excellent dietary sources of fatty acids.

Supplements

For an extra boost of joint health, a glucosamine-based dietary supplement can help. Glucosamine is nature’s basic building block for maintaining joint cartilage and can help counteract some of the effects of wear and tear on the joints and rejuvenating comfort and mobility. Brands that offer at least 1,500mg of glucosamine are recommended in order to get the best results.

So start the summer off right! Protect your body and eat healthy in order to stay healthy.
