The rotator cuff is made up of four muscles and associated tendons which work together to keep the shoulder joint in the socket and enable movement in multiple directions. Injuries to the rotator cuff can range from minor strains requiring physical therapy, to major tears in need of surgical repair. Here are a few tips for alleviating pain associated with rotator cuff injury:

Therapy through cold and compression: Applying cold to your injury has been used for centuries to reduce pain and swelling. This method also known as cryotherapy has been improved with modern technology, allowing for better ways than traditional ice packs or ice bath methods. There are specialized wraps which allow chambers of cold water to flow through and make the treatment more effective. This method is also more comfortable because the application site does not get wet and you can also control the temperature.

Over-the-counter medication: The shoulder joint pain is associated with inflamed tissues located within that area. Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDS) such as aspirin and ibuprofen can help to reduce the pain associated with this. This option comes with a limited risk, but if you continue to have pain that lasts for long periods of time it may be time to look into treatments that have longer lasting effects.

Prescribed medication: Pain from your injury may still be severe enough that your doctor may look into other methods such as steroid injections into the shoulder that is affected. These treatments come with risks which is why you must understand the implications before starting this type of method.
