Individualized Home Exercise Programs

A home exercise program (HEP) is one of the most important components of a successful therapy program. At Ortho Rhode Island, our therapists will provide an individualized home exercise program as part of an overall treatment plan. A HEP is a personalized plan of select exercises that will support your clinic-based treatment and aid in your overall recovery. Home exercise programs are implemented at the time of your initial evaluation to ensure that you tolerate the exercise and that your form and technique are appropriate. HEPs will be progressed and advanced throughout your course of treatment.

Although many patients share many common factors, careful thought and consideration is required when we design a home program for you. The correct selection of frequency, intensity, and resistance of exercises will help you achieve your rehab goals in an optimal timeframe. Not all exercises work for everyone and multiple components of your examination and diagnosis are taken into consideration when customizing a plan. This includes looking at the body as a whole. If your issue is a knee sprain, your home program may include exercises for your hip. Or, if your shoulder is the problem, you may need exercises for your neck.

Types of therapeutic exercises that may be appropriate for you include:

  • Range of motion exercises to improve joint flexibility and movement
  • Proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation to improve balance and coordination
  • Isometric/isotonic exercises to improve joint strength and stability
  • Manual resistive exercises to improve joint strength and motor control
  • Aerobic/endurance exercises to improve activity tolerance

Compliance with your individualized home exercise program is very important for a successful recovery. Unfortunately, many patients have difficulty maintaining consistency with their home program because of their busy schedules. At Ortho Rhode Island, your therapist will listen to your needs and work with you to establish an appropriate program that can be reasonably completed based on your individual situation.
