We all love to indulge in turkey and other delicious dishes on Thanksgiving, but there is a way to indulge without overdoing it. Here are a few tips from Blackstone Orthopedics & Sports Medicine for keeping your Thanksgiving happy and healthy.

Get in some exercise- Start your Thanksgiving by exercising to jumpstart your metabolism and feel great all day. Find a way to move around by visiting the gym, going for a walk or participating in the annual turkey trot.

Have Breakfast- Some people prepare for Thanksgiving dinner by starving themselves in anticipation of the large holiday meal ahead. Doing this only sets you up for overeating. Instead of skipping meals, have a healthy breakfast and a small lunch before the big Thanksgiving meal.

Water- Stay hydrated all day so you’re less likely to overeat. Start by hydrating in the morning and keep it going throughout the whole day.

Portion Size- The table is most likely going to be overloaded with delicious food but a small taste is just enough to satisfy. Keep your portion sizes healthy to avoid overeating.

Family- The holiday is a time to reconnect with family members. So rather than focusing your time on bingeing, gather and talk to your family and friends.

Breathe- Before taking your first bite, take three deep breaths. This will help you to slow down and enjoy your food rather than devouring it. Put your fork down between bites so you don’t end up operating on autopilot. Doing this will most likely help you to eat less.

Post- Meal Workout- After your feast take a walk before dessert. Doing this will help you to get moving and burn some calories prior to dessert.

Enjoy- Savor your favorite dishes and desserts. Thanksgiving happens once a year after all!
