There are many possible injuries that can occur from skiing. Knee injuries are very common for skiers as well as shoulder fractures. There are various strategies that skiers can keep in mind to prevent injuries in skiing. Here are some strategies for proper preparation before hitting the slopes:

Stay Fit- When you are preparing for a ski outing, make sure you are in good physical condition. If you’re just getting back into shape find a ski run that is not too challenging and gradually build yourself back up to more challenging trails. Overexerting yourself can lead to injuries so be sure to avoid doing this to yourself by stopping when you are tired or in pain.

Warm up- Cold muscles and joints are more prone to injury so warm up with jumping jacks or run in place for 3 to 5 minutes. To complete your warm up, take a couple slow ski runs.

Stay Hydrated- Drink plenty of water before, during, and after skiing. Even in the cold you can become dehydrated which can affect endurance.

Know Safety Rules- Before skiing at a resort make sure you understand and abide by all the safety rules. You should also know the general safety rules of how to safely stop, merge, and yield to other skiers.

Adjust you Ski Boots- Make sure your ski boots are tightened and snapped in properly. If this is not done right, you could possibly slip out of your skis causing serious injuries.

Stay on marked trails- Doing so will help you to avoid avalanche areas and steep hillsides. On marked trails, watch out for rocks and patches of ice.

Pay attention to warnings regarding temperature drops and upcoming storms. Make adjustments depending on the predicted conditions.

Stay in sight- Skiers should have partners and stay in sight of each other. If a partner gets lost, stop and wait.

If anyone that is with you is experiencing hypothermia or frostbite, immediately seek medical attention. Ensure that everyone knows the proper procedures for seeking help if injuries do occur.
