Sitting in a chair for 8 hours a day, 5 days a week can certainly take a toll on your body. Blackstone Orthopedics & Sports Medicine wants to provide you with tips for self-improvement month that will help you stay healthy and in shape at work.

1) Avoid the Snacks

The snacks your coworkers place on your desk can cost you hundreds of extra calories in your diet. If it’s out of sight, it’s out of mind. See if you can get your co-workers to replace those bowls of candy with healthier snacks.

2) Drink Plenty of Water

Drinking 8 to 10 glasses of water per day will help keep you hydrated. Other foods that are a great source of water include fruits like watermelon, grapes, and apples. Set goals when drinking water such as bring a 16 ounce bottle of water to work and try to finish it by lunch time, then fill it up again to finish by 3 p.m. and by 5 p.m., finish a third bottle.

3) Take a Walk During Lunch

Stay healthy and in shape by exercising throughout the day. It is a great idea to walk during lunch to not only burn calories, but to also de-stress. If you’re too busy for a walk, park your car a little farther or take the stairs instead of the elevator.

4) Pack a Healthy Lunch

Packing a healthy lunch will help with portion control and eating in reasonable portions is an important part of your health. Many times, it’s not that you are eating unhealthy food, it’s just you’re eating too much. If you have a large piece of pizza, split it with a coworker and then eat a salad packed with veggies.

5) Disinfect your Keyboard and Mouse

There are thousands of germs just waiting to make you sick located on your keyboard, mouse and phone so make sure to disinfect. Viruses can survive from hours to days on a hard surface and can be transferred to you. Use a disinfectant cleaner that is effective against a wide variety of viruses to keep you from getting sick.

The most important tip for staying healthy at work is to be self-aware and know your limits. Know when to take breaks and get plenty of exercise to help you physically and mentally.
