To ensure ethical and effective research practices, we provide comprehensive training, including courses on HIPAA compliance, human subject protection, and a “Research 101” orientation. Students and interns from all backgrounds and experience levels are welcome. For those who have not previously completed a course in human subjects protection, we require the Good Clinical Practice (GCP) training—a thorough and accessible introduction to responsible research conduct.
We offer both official internships for academic credit and informal opportunities for individuals seeking hands-on research experience. Interns have joined us from institutions such as Holy Cross, URI, Northeastern, and Notre Dame, with many continuing on to medical or nursing schools. Opportunities include shadowing physicians, observing surgeries, gaining exposure to biologics and physical therapy, and contributing to meaningful research projects.
Past research assistants have gone on to pursue medical degrees at institutions like Brown and Temple, as well as nursing programs such as the University of New England.
“My internship at OrthoRI allowed me to gain meaningful experience in the field and exposure to what working in research can actually look like. I created fantastic connections that led to a full-time job as a research assistant and eventually as a research coordinator. The program’s structure allowed me to have hands-on involvement in several different projects, and the leadership was always interested in promoting my growth—both professionally and academically.”
“During my undergraduate studies, I worked as a research assistant/intern at Ortho Rhode Island for Dr. Robert Marchand. I was fortunate to work alongside such a knowledgeable and supportive team who were always willing to teach and guide me. This experience not only strengthened my technical skills, but also deepened my appreciation for how clinical research drives improvements in patient care. It was truly a rewarding experience that helped shape my academic and professional growth!”
“Working in the research department at Ortho Rhode Island has been such a great experience! With many ongoing projects, Ortho Rhode Island is always looking for new ways to grow and continue providing the best care to patients. The projects are engaging and allowed me to gain further proficiency in Excel, patient care systems, and to better understand orthopedics as a field. Everyone involved is truly part of a team, which has allowed me to learn so much.”
“When I first began working in the research department, I had no previous experience with research, but I went on to develop not only research-related skills, but also professional skills that will be useful in the future. From learning how a research project is constructed and managed, to attending orthopedic conferences and meetings, my time with Ortho Rhode Island Research has been immensely valuable.”
Our Adult Reconstruction Fellowship provides advanced clinical training in joint replacement and orthopedic trauma. Fellows engage in high-volume, complex cases and contribute to ongoing research initiatives. This program is designed to cultivate expertise in both surgical practice and academic research.
We are always looking for passionate individuals interested in contributing to orthopedic research and education. Whether you’re a student seeking experience or a professional aiming to advance the field, Ortho Rhode Island offers a collaborative environment to grow, learn, and make a difference.
