Over the summer, my daughter and I participated in the Vermont Overland, a gravel bicycle race which encompassed 59 miles of dirt roads and over 7000 feet of elevation. Although both of us spend a lot of time on bicycles, this was something outside of our comfort zones. We developed a training plan with the help of an accomplished cyclist that included physical, nutritional, and mental preparation. Injuries, however, are something that one does not plan for and when one came up, I found myself doubting whether I’d be able to take on such a challenge.

With increasing mileage and hours on the bike, I developed a knee issue and acute Achilles tendonitis. The race was drawing near, and all the planning, training, and fun was now at risk. It was time to become a patient at Ortho Rhode Island. I was evaluated, diagnostic imaging was performed, and a plan was developed on the most effective way to treat these conditions while maintaining my training.

It has always been rewarding for me to help a patient achieve their goals. Being on the other side as a patient reinforced the importance of communication and collaboration between patient and provider to be successful. The process is the same if they are training for an event or looking to be able to perform activities of daily living.

It would not have been possible for me to reach the starting line without the expert care of Dr. Moriarty and Klayton of our Ortho RI Biologics team as well as Ellen Girouard from our Physical Therapy team.

I am already looking forward to the event next year and know I have the team to be successful!
