JOINT HEALTH
At Ortho Rhode Island, we’re proud to support the March 2 a Million campaign. An initiative aimed at reducing opioid use after total joint replacement and helping patients recover safely and successfully.
Total joint replacement surgery, like knee or hip replacement, can bring remarkable improvements in pain and mobility. But managing post-operative pain doesn’t have to rely on heavy opioids. That’s where March 2 a Million comes in.
What is the “March 2 a Million”?
This national effort encourages healthcare teams and patients to work together to limit routine opioid prescribing after joint surgery. The goal is to reach one million patients recovering with fewer opioids and without compromising comfort or function.
Why it matters:
• Opioids aren’t the only option. Research shows that most joint replacement patients do well with a combination of non-opioid medications, nerve blocks, advanced anesthesia techniques, ice, movement, and education.
• Fewer opioids = fewer risks. Opioids can cause nausea, constipation, dizziness, and in some cases long-term dependence. Using them judiciously helps reduce those risks.
• Better recovery experience. Patients often bounce back faster when pain is managed thoughtfully with multiple strategies instead of relying solely on opioids.
What we do for you:
We tailor pain control plans that use evidence-based alternatives like acetaminophen, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (when safe), regional anesthesia, and guided physical therapy to keep you comfortable and active after surgery.
What you can do:
Before your surgery, talk with your care team about your pain goals and expectations. After surgery, follow your personalized recovery plan, stay mobile, ask questions, and let us know how you’re feeling. We’re here to support you every step of the way.
Together, we’re making meaningful strides toward safer, more effective recoveries after total joint surgery. One patient at a time.
