December 2025 marks the 15th anniversary of the first ever Mako robotic-assisted joint replacement surgery in New England, performed by Ortho Rhode Island joint replacement surgeon Dr. Bob Marchand at South County Hospital.
This landmark surgery, a partial knee replacement, was soon followed by the introduction of robotic-assisted total hip replacement in 2011, and total knee replacement procedures in 2016. Today, Ortho Rhode Island leads the way in state-of-the-art orthopedic care. Their team of highly trained joint replacement surgeons offers the latest in Mako robotic-assisted surgery, and performs complex cases at the Center for Advanced Orthopedic Surgery, a partnership with South County Health. ![]()
Ortho Rhode Island’s pioneering role in bringing Mako robotic-assisted surgery to the state exemplifies their longstanding commitment to providing innovative orthopedic care that has restored the mobility of thousands of patients. Dr. Marchand has performed over 10,000 Mako procedures, and Dr. David Burns and Dr. Sidney Migliori, fellow Ortho Rhode Island joint replacement surgeons and early adopters of Mako technology, have recently reached the milestones of 2,000 and 1,000 Mako joint replacement surgeries performed, respectively.
