Adult Reconstruction Fellowship

The Ortho Rhode Island Adult Reconstruction Fellowship offers a high-volume, high-complexity clinical experience grounded in advanced surgical techniques, cutting-edge technology, and mentorship from nationally recognized joint replacement surgeons. Fellows are actively involved in every aspect of patient care, from preoperative planning to postoperative follow-up, and receive focused exposure to both primary and revision hip and knee arthroplasty procedures.

Why Choose Ortho Rhode Island

Fellows benefit from comprehensive exposure to multiple surgical approaches for hip arthroplasty, including anterior, posterior, superior, and lateral techniques, performed both on and off specialized surgical tables. The program integrates advanced imaging and navigation modalities, offering experience with both fluoroscopy-guided and imageless techniques. Fellows train across multiple robotic platforms and implant systems, gaining valuable insight into the nuances of surgical decision-making across vendor technologies.

Surgical cases span inpatient and outpatient settings, including extensive work in our ambulatory surgery center, Ortho Rhode Island Orthopedic Surgery Center. Fellows gain hands-on exposure to the business side of orthopedics, including ASC operations, implant selection strategies, and value-based care. The program is structured for one fellow per academic year, allowing for individualized mentorship and autonomy.

Living in Rhode Island

Rhode Island offers an exceptional quality of life with minimal commute times and access to both vibrant city life and coastal tranquility. From the cultural and culinary offerings of Providence to the beaches of Newport and Narragansett, everything is within an hour’s drive. The state’s central location makes weekend trips to Boston, New York, and throughout New England easy and accessible.

“I originally picked ORI for my fellowship because I had a gut feeling after my interview that it would be a great fellowship. And based on my experience, my gut feeling was right. They do a high volume of primary and revision cases and are at the forefront of robotics. The attendings are very interested in teaching and making sure I get the best experience in and out of the OR.”

Mentorship Structure

Ortho Rhode Island fellows rotate every two months with two different attending surgeons, completing three rotation blocks over the course of the year. This model fosters continuity while exposing the fellow to a breadth of techniques and mentorship styles. Formal evaluations are conducted at the end of each rotation to track progress and support growth.

Research Opportunities

Fellows have the opportunity to work on any of the ongoing research projects in addition to being fully supported in pursuing their own required scholarly interests. Current studies include:

  • 10-year total survivorship analysis of patellofemoral components
  • Outcomes using the Trident II cup in THA
  • 10-year retrospective study comparing robotic and manual total knee arthroplasty (TKA) outcomes
  • Ongoing data collection through 2028 on TKA and THA outcomes, with a recent IRB-approved amendment
  • Recent fellow-led research includes a retrospective analysis of outcomes following conversion from unicompartmental to tricompartmental knee arthroplasty (n=17), evaluating rWOMAC, PROMIS, FJ, and KOOS Jr. at key perioperative intervals.
